Fox News thought they could pick on Denmark. They were hilariously roasted instead.

Socialism is a broad term that conservatives often play fast and loose with.

Most commonly they equate totalitarian socialist/communist regimes (Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela) with European democratic socialist states (Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway).

They often make the same false equivalency to criticize American democratic socialist politicians such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In reality, the two systems are vastly different from one another.

The totalitarian regimes are marked by crushing poverty, human rights violations, and limited personal freedom.

Democratic Socialist states are based on personal freedom and a capitalist economic system bolstered by a robust social safety net which includes free health care and education.

Fox Business anchor Trish Regan made the same tired, inaccurate comparison in a recent segment called “Something rotten in the state of Denmark.”

In the report, she chronicled the rampant poverty and out-of-control inflation in Venezuela and then compared it with the Denmark's Democratic socialist system.

She warned Americans about Denmark's 56% top tax rate which is similar to the rates paid by the wealthiest Californians and New Yorkers.

She also claimed that Denmark has an out-of-control unemployment problem, when actually, the percentage of its population that works is greater than that of the U.S.

Then she bashed the country for having free universities. While in the United States, 44 million borrowers collectively owe $1.5 trillion in student loan debt.

To combat Regan’s false characterization of their Scandinavian paradise, Denmark’s Social Democrats released a video response entitled “Something is rotten at Fox News.”

The video, hosted by former government minister Dan Jorgensen, hilariously deconstructs Ms Regan’s false claims about welfare, education, and employment.

Regan has since attempted to clarify her remarks saying, “I was never implying that conditions in Denmark were similar in any way to the current tragedy on the ground there in Venezuela. I was merely pointing out… that socialism is not the way.”
